A Bit About Me
I am a technology nut with an obsession in computer security and shiny new things. From time to time I have also been know to bring both “the thunder” and “the lightning” to a rowdy game of euchre.
My Past Computer Experience
My family first purchased a computer when I was in grade 5, when it was becoming readily apparent that computers would be a necessary component of student life. To me that computer was only ever something that you turned on when you had to; a tool to be used to type something up for homework or when you inevitably got bored of that and wanted to play a quick game of minesweeper. It really wasn’t until a short while later, when we connected that humble machine to the World Wide Web, that things really began to click for me.
Since that time I have gone through five different computers, from Windows 98 to Windows 7, and each experience has strengthened my desire to pursue computers, in one form or another, recently culminating in a degree in computer science. Today I am finishing that degree, working at one of the largest companies in Canada, and am a founding member of a small software startup.
My Past Experience With Free Software
My experience with free software probably started back in grade 5 when I first connected to MSN Messenger in order to talk to friends and classmates. From that point, and until very recently, I cannot really think of anything that would fit the ‘free’ description.
Today, even as a Windows user, free and open source software makes up a large portion of my overall day-to-day software usage. A quick glance at my installed applications reveals that from my BitTorrent client to my media player to my web browser there is nary a day that goes by that I don’t interact with at least one piece of free software. As part of my job I manage a VERY SIMPLE Linux based fileserver, and have briefly fooled around with Ubuntu 8.04-9.04 at different times over the last year or so.
Why I Agreed To This
I agreed to this because as a computer enthusiast I love trying the newest thing. While I have tinkered around with Linux, and other free software packages, in the past I am far from proficient at any of them and still consider myself very much a novice user. I would like to change this fact and add another bullet point to my resumé.
What I Hope To Get Out Of It
I am going to shoot for the stars here and say that after four months of constant use I will have learned enough of the ins and outs to be as comfortable within a Linux environment as I current am within a Windows one. My bonus goal is to have a fully functional, self-created, program that runs native to Linux.
What My Current Computer Setup Is
A Dell Studio XPS laptop running Windows Vista.
What Distribution Am I Running?
openSUSE 11.2. Previously Fedora 11.
