Linux Mint 22

Version 22 is the first new (major) release of Linux Mint in 2 years. So what are my initial impressions? It’s an awful lot like version 21… and that’s a good thing!

The biggest difference between the two versions is that 22 is based on the latest Ubuntu 24.04 LTS which means it ships with updated software, kernels, and more. Having said that there are still a few key differences between Mint and Ubuntu to be aware of:

  • Mint runs X Server by default instead of Wayland
  • Mint doesn’t use Snap packages but does offer Flatpack instead
  • Mint ships its own selection of apps, many of which are the in-house x-app replacements, as well as its Cinnamon desktop environment

From a user perspective though there aren’t a whole lot of big changes coming from version 21. I suppose to some that might be a bit disappointing but honestly I’m fine with it. Linux Mint is as close to an ‘install and get on with your life’ Linux desktop experience that I’ve ever had and this release is no different.

For anyone trying out Linux for the first time or for anyone that just wants a machine that gets out of your way, rather than one where you have to constantly fix things, Mint is a great option!
